Background

The Zambia Medical Association is a membership organization of Doctors in Zambia. Founded in 1964, the association has been providing support services to its members by representing their professional interests, advocating on behalf of the Zambian people on issues pertaining to health and influencing health policy in Zambia. With a membership of over 2000, growing at over 200 members per year, ZMA has undergone significant growth since its inception both in numbers and visibility. ZMA is organized into different levels of management; the General assembly, the council and the executive. The executive runs the daily activities of the Secretariat and implanting policy. The council is the highest organ for policy analysis whereas as the General Assembly is the final and highest policy making body. The association is divided into chapters based on the 10 provinces in Zambia headed by the Chair. In 2014 ZMA established its international presence by becoming a member of the World Medical Association. Most of ZMA’s policy direction springs from its Strategic plan.

The aim of ZMA is to build a “A healthy and productive nation through motivated doctors that uphold professionalism and Excellence”.

To build a healthy and productive nation by promoting high standards of medical practice and influencing policy and public opinion on health matters in Zambia.

This 55th edition of the AGM will concentrate on strategic objective 3 of the ZMA strategic plan whose focus is on “provision of quality health care for all”. Under this objective, the association’s wishes to advocate for improved universal health care through primary health and the integration of medical doctors to improve care for the elderly.
